The Hampton Redevelopment and Housing Authority (HRHA) was initially created to redevelop the downtown area Hampton. In the 1960's, the Authority undertook five major redevelopment projects with funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), as follows: Bridge Street (downtown Hampton); Old Hampton; Phoebus, Buckroe; and West Hampton.
The Authority contracts with the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development to be responsible for two major housing programs: They own and operate three public housing apartment complex and manage over 2,000 Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers.
The Housing Authority also owns and/or manages over 400 non-public housing units across the city of Hampton.
For several years now, the City of Hampton has contracted with the Housing Authority to be a subrecipient of funds received from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development and administer the HOME and CDBG Program.
HRHA, a development/real estate management organization, supports the strategic initiatives of the City of Hampton, by promoting opportunities that revitalize communities, enhancing the quality of life, and providing a link to housing and self-sufficiency.
