Public Housing (PH)

The Public Housing Program is administered by the local Public Housing Authority (PHA). Each PHA operates in its own geographical area. The area or areas can consist of one city or up to several counties, depending on the size. You will find that large metropolitan cities like New York and Los Angeles have multiple PHAs. Once you find the city that you wish to relocate to, it is important to find out which PHA has the jurisdiction or authority over that particular area.

Simply put, the PH program is where the PHA is the landlord. The PHA will have several properties/communities that it manages within its area. Once you have chosen the area and the PHA, you need to fill out an application. The application will determine if you pre-qualify for the program based on your income and household size. When you initially apply for the program, the total household income for your family size has to be under the income maximum amount allowed for that family size. The maximum income limit for each household size is known as the .income limit.. If the household.s annual income is over the income limit, then you may not qualify for the program. If you are under the income limits for your household size, you would then either chose a unit that is available or be placed on a waiting list.

Participants will generally pay 30% of their monthly income toward rent to the PHA.
