The Wilson Housing Authority will open the waiting list for its Housing Choice Voucher program — popularly known as Section 8 — on Monday March 11, 2024. WHA officials anticipate receiving approximately 1,200 completed pre-applications. Beginning at 7 a.m. March 11, interested individuals and families will be able to pick up a pre-application form at the Housing Authority Administration Building, 301 E. Nash St. and the Wilson Housing Authority website, www.wilsonha.org. The pre-application may be obtained from the Nash Street site from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Pre-applications will be taken for two weeks, and only one pre-application per household will be accepted. All pre-applications must be returned to the Wilson Housing Authority’s Administration Building by 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, 2024. A completed pre-application can be returned in one of four ways: • Dropping it off in the return box in the lobby of the Wilson Housing Authority’s Administration Office. • Mailing it to Wilson Housing Authority, HCV Waiting List, 301 E. Nash St., Wilson, NC 27893. All mailed pre-applications must be postmarked by March 26. • Emailing it to HCVwaitlist2024@gmail.com. All emails must be received by 4 p.m. on March 26. • Faxing it to 252-291-0984. All faxes must be received by 4 p.m. on March 26. A lottery system will be used to randomly select 250 applicants for the waiting list. All selected applicants will be notified by mail by April 30. Selected applicants will be asked to fill out a full application and will be prioritized based on the following preferences: • An applicant involuntarily displaced by a natural disaster declared by the president of the United States or permanently displaced by fire through no fault of their own. • An applicant who has actively served in the U.S. military and has been discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable. • An applicant who is homeless and is receiving case management support or is homeless as a result of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking or other dangerous or life-threatening conditions that relate to violence against the individual or a family member. • An applicant who is head of a working family that meets one of the following criteria: has worked an average of 20 hours a week or more for at least 11 months out of the last 12 months; has been seasonally employed for no less than two years with their current employer and worked an average of 20 hours a week during the season; is verifiably self-employed, according to WHA policies; is 62 years of age or older; is a person with disabilities as defined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. • All other applicants.
