About Versailles Housing Authority

In 1937 Congress created the U.S. Housing Act to provide low rent public housing for low-income citizens. The Housing Authority of Versailles began in 1961 with the building of 42 units on Oak, Linden, Poplar and Jackson Street. Ten years later (1971) 54 more units were constructed on Oak, Poplar and Linden Street. The final stage of construction took place in 1981 with an additional 60 apartments being built on Clifton Road, High Street, Berry Avenue and Cleveland Street. There are now a total of 156 units with an office/community building and maintenance shop.

The Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funds the operating expenses of the properties. However, it is the Housing Authority of Versailles that manages this community. A staff of six administers the programs and maintains the community that houses 156 families.
