Bloomington Housing Authority is a public housing agency that helps provide decent and safe rental housing for eligible low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. The mission of the Bloomington Housing Authority, also known as the BHA, is to administer public funds using available resources in a manner which will allow the Housing Authority to offer a variety of affordable housing opportunities and supportive services that foster stability and self sufficiency through creative partnerships while servicing our customers with the highest level of professionalism and respect.
The BHA was established in 1961 and the first development of affordable housing units were completed in 1968. Currently, the BHA employs a staff of 33 employees and provides housing assistance to over 2,500 Monroe County individuals and families each year. We have three affordable housing communities and provide more than 1,300 Housing Choice Vouchers, also known as Section 8, that allow income eligible families to rent in the private market. Over 65 families participate in the Family Self Sufficiency Program (FSS).
In 2012, the BHA scored 100% on HUD's Section 8 Management Assessment Program (SEMAP) and were deemed a High Performing Housing Authority on HUD's Public Housing Assessment System (PHAS).
In 2004, the BHA began a major transformation process to rehabilitate its affordable housing units, grounds and focus on quality of life issues, environmental updates, and create meaningful programs for children and adults. The overall appearance and functionality of the BHA properties should reflect an attractive and colorful community, rich in character as it is in diversity. Through our redevelopment efforts the BHA hopes to ultimately instill a sense of pride in every resident we serve.
