The Alachua County Housing Authority was founded in 1967. The first administrative office of the ACHA was located at 22 West University Avenue, Gainesville, FL.
The first 200 Public Housing units were built in 1971 and the remaining built in 1985. The Authority received its first Section 8 Vouchers in 1976 .
Around 1979, the Authority moved its office to the historic Duck Pound Area at 636 NE 1st Street, Gainesville, FL and subsequently moved to 240 SW 1st Street, Gainesville, FL. To accommodate the new court house the Authority moved back to the Duck Pond area to its current location in the Historic DaCosta House located at 703 N.E. 1st Street, Gainesville, FL.
The Alachua County Housing Authority (ACHA) provides rental subsidies and manages affordable Public Housing units for low income families, seniors, and persons with disabilities throughout the Alachua County area.
The mission of the Alachua County Housing Authority is to assist low income and disadvantaged members of the community locate and maintain affordable housing in a safe and sanitary environment. Additionally, the Authority supports community programs that assist those who are least able to represent themselves, such as the homeless, elderly and children.
